INTERNATIONAL PETITION

APPEALING TO ISRAEL’S PRIME MINISTER      TO AUTHORIZE THE REPAIR OF THE ETHIOPIAN                         MONASTERY BUILDINGS IN JERUSALEM

We, the followers of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Faith, residing throughout the world, as well as all people who believe in justice, hereby submit our fervent appeal to H.E. the Prime Minister of Israel to permit the repair of the premises of the historic Ethiopian monastery in Jerusalem, otherwise known as the Deir El Sultan Monastery. Our appeal is based on the fact that the continuing deterioration of the monastery premises will lead not only to their collapse but also to the endangerment of the lives of the resident clergy, monks as well as the visiting parishioners and tourists including Israeli citizens.

The fact that the monastery buildings are in a serious state of disrepair has been confirmed by qualified professionals. Repeated attempts by the responsible authorities of the monastery to undertake an appropriate repair of the premises have so far been thwarted by an unreasonable interpretation of the so-called “status quo” arrangement established during the Ottoman Empire.

We have no doubt that Israel’s Prime Minister would not allow the historic monastery buildings to collapse and endanger its occupants. We, therefore, appeal to the Prime Minister to authorize the full repair and maintenance of the buildings as a matter of the utmost urgency in order to avoid an unnecessary disaster from occurring.

We also call on H.E. the Prime Minister of Ethiopia as well as His Holiness the Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church to use their good offices by calling on the Israeli Prime Minister to facilitate the urgent repair of the historic Deir El Sultan Monastery premises.

We pray to the Almighty God to save the historic Ethiopian Monastery in Jersualem.
