A conference and concert, both free and open to the public, will anchor this two-day exploration of the Ethiopian diaspora community -- its arts, literature, and its growing sense of identity as a new African community within the United States. Conference highlights include a keynote address by father and daughter Dr. Getatchew Haile and Rebecca Haile (Tsai Audiorium, CGIS), a reading by Dinaw Mengestu from his award-winning novel The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears (Barker Center), and a concert by Ethiopian musician, Mulatu Astatke, creator, composer, and performer of Ethio-Jazz. (Sanders Theatre) The conference is sponsored by the Harvard University Committee on African Studies, in cooperation with the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, The Provostial Fund for the Humanities, the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research, the Office for the Arts, the Department of African and African American Studies, and the Department of Music. Monday April 14 at 8pm MULATU ASTATKE AND THE EITHER/ORCHESTRA CONCERT Works of Mulatu Astatke, performed by Mulatu Astatke and the Either/Orchestra, with premieres. Mulatu Astatke is an Ethiopian musician who creates, composes, and performs Ethio-Jazz. Mulatu was musically trained at the Trinity College of Music in England and the Berklee College of Music in Boston. A multi-instrumentali st who plays the vibraphone, keyboard, and conga. Mulatu has performed numerous concerts in Ethiopia and worldwide. The concert will feature premieres of a number of Mulatu's new works, including a section of The Yared Opera.
