Having read Ms. Vicki Huddleston and Tibor Nagy`s peice in which they forwarded their grounds and points against HR2003, I found it appropriate to respond to and lay bare their assertions that the passage of the bill would fuel the march to war and impair Ethiopia`s ability to defend itself. Ms. Vicki Huddleston has joined Meles-TPLF`s crusade against HR2003 on untenable grounds and her motives are not hidden.
Ethiopians can not forget her vicious and despicable role in trying to divide and undermine the Ethiopian democratic opposition and resusciate the brutal regime of Meles Zenawi. She can not be seen as a credible and impartial person when it comes to issues concerning democracy, human rights, good governance in Ethiopia and the client regime of Meles Zenawi. Although posted as a diplomat by the World`s sole super power, she was regarded as a nuisance by Ethiopians struggling for democracy, freedom and justice. She is aware of the fact that HR2003 does not go far enough as we would like it to punish the client regime she had been defending and nurturing at the expense of the long term interests of her own country in Ethiopia and the region.
The bill has embodied a carrot and stick approach providing definite incentives and requires the surrogate regime among others to respect fundamental human rights, show restraint in its behaviour towards the opposition and accountability. It is not punitive but trying to pinch the spoiled boy of the Bush administration, Meles Zenawi who should have been dragged to the court of justice for his atrocities. The tax payers of the US and their representatives have the moral duty and obligation to reign in and abate a client tyrant terrorising his defenceless subjects and destabilizing the whole region.
The renowned congressmen, Payne and Smith are ressurecting and upholding the American values when they have followed the tragic turn of events in Ethiopia after the May, 2005 elections and decided to initiate and sponsor HR2003. By doing so, they are heeding to the timely calls of millions of Ethiopians languishing under tyranny and crying for justice. Ms. Huddleston also sheds crocodile tears as if she is concerned about the security and well being of Ethiopians. On the other hand, she knows that Ethiopians single out Meles Zenawi as the most dangerous enemy of their country and accuse him of compromising and jeopardising its security and welbeing. Ms. Huddleston has only brought disgrace and shame on her by defending one of the wordl`s brute tyrants, Meles Zenawi.
